This work was an entry in the challenge titled 'Time Travel' held at the 2023 Epic Games Korea,
and was selected for the final release as an excellent work.
and was selected for the final release as an excellent work.
Under the theme of 'Time travel', I returned to the situation in 1899
when Impressionist artist Monet was painting his masterpiece, (1899), at his home in Giverny, France.
when Impressionist artist Monet was painting his masterpiece, (1899), at his home in Giverny, France.
It is said that even though Monet had an indoor atelier,
he preferred outdoor painting that could capture vivid light, standing firm in any weather and retaining the beauty that nature provides.
By capturing the sunlight, the sparkle of the water, and the colors of the water lilies,
I wanted to return to the moment when I was both excited and thirsty and convey the lotus garden seen from his eyes on the screen.
This project was my first endeavor where I utilized Unreal Engine5 to set up environments and used modeling tools to create some assets,
while also employing various programs like Quixel Mixer and Substance Painter to meticulously work on the Materials.
Reproducing the spaces Monet cherished and creating a video that follows his perspective has left me with a joyful and precious experience.

The experience of making this piece has inspired me to commit to creating works that are like lyrical poems, offering beautiful and joyful emotions.
While watching the video, I hope you can relax in ecstasy while appreciating the sparkling nature through Monet's eyes.
Thank you for watching.
WIP
I gathered references about Monet by watching as many movies, documentaries, articles, and tourist blogs about him as possible.
In particular, I was able to learn about Monet's passion for outdoor painting, his house and garden at Giverny,
and his love for the vegetation of Lotus Garden through the documentary film about Monet produced in 1914 and the film 'Monet: Shadow and Light'.
Gathering as many references as possible was a great help in recreating his atelier
and Lotus garden and creating a video that follows the gaze of the painter Monet.
Through the collection of image resources, it can be seen that his studio has yellow walls, large windows in the ceiling made of glass,
green windows on the walls, and ivy vines along the walls, with various sizes of canvases and work tools scattered around.

As a painter who preferred outdoor painting, it is said that he struggled to work in the indoor studio unless the weather was truly bad.
Therefore, in the video's studio scenes, I included shots of being captivated by the beautiful sunlight shining through the windows, leading back to the garden.

While creating this work, I used various assets and Substance Painter to express heavily soiled painting tools
and the surface details of Monet's masterpiece, 'Lotus Pond'.
I downloaded the image of the 'Lotus Pond' work online and applied it as a material to the canvas mesh.
Since the surface was so smooth, I drew a normal map with a brush in Substance Painter to express the layered oil painting surface.
In addition, various paint colors and hand stains on the easel were also expressed.

Creating a Japanese-style bridge using modeling tools in Unreal Engine
I was able to easily model the Japanese bridge that Monet created himself through the newly added modeling function in Unreal Engine 5 version.
